Prepare to finally kick your smoking habit once and for all. Every third Thursday of November The American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout event encourages smokers to go the distance, and finally give up smoking. This annual event paves the way for smokers across the country to triumph over their addiction and get one step closer to a healthier life.

Did you know that 42 million Americans smoke cigarettes? It’s no surprise that tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. In 2013 research also found that there were 12.4 million cigar smokers in the U.S., and over 2.3 million who smoked tobacco from a pipe.

By quitting smoking, even for just one day, you are making a huge leap in the right direction. Research finds that the first couple of weeks after quitting smoking are the most difficult, and it usually takes about 8-12 weeks to feel completely comfortable with your new lifestyle change. Although, the symptoms you experience may be difficult for a while it’s important to remind yourself why you are quitting, and how this discomfort is only a fraction of what you will inevitably experience down the road (i.e. painful diseases like cancer, surgery, or emphysema) if you continue the habit. And with the uncomfortable symptoms of quitting come immediate rewards like, better breath, a better sense of smell and taste, whiter teeth, easier time breathing, and an increased self -Confidence!
