May is Global Employee Health and Fitness Month, an international observance of health and fitness in the workplace. The goal of GEHFM is to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle to employers and their employees through worksite activities, according to the Health and Fitness Month website.
There are several ways employers can promote physical health and fitness at work, no matter how big the company.
We love meetings for the free food. Unfortunately, not all free food is healthy. In fact, it’s not uncommon for workplace meetings to be catered with pizza, fatty deli sandwiches and plenty of sweets. Instead, provide your employees low fat snack options such as fruits and vegetables and dip or pretzels instead of chips. In addition, provide low-fat milk instead of cream for coffee.
Physical activity breaks
Sitting at a desk all day can have adverse effects on your health. Encourage a healthy work environment by offering physical activity breaks. Some companies offer yoga or spinning classes, but you don’t have to spend money to promote physical activity. Whether it’s going to the office gym or simply taking a walk outside, physical activity is a proven stress reliever and can help boost your metabolism.
Keep in mind, all aspects of wellness are important. Consider providing a dark, quiet area in the office where employees can go to relax, listen to music and decompress. Additionally, allowing frequent small breaks is crucial for mental health as it improves one’s ability to clear their head and solve problems.
Provide a health fair
Putting on a health fair is a great way to educate employees on the benefits of health and fitness. You can bring outside vendors, doctors and local drugstore reps in to provide free screenings.
There are a number of creative ways to promote health and fitness in the workplace. This May, celebrate Global Employee Health and Fitness Month by challenging employees get fit and be healthier.
