Before You Blend
Smoothies are everywhere is seems, from morning cooking shows featuring health experts to fast-food chains trying to lure in health conscious dinners. While they can seem like a healthy snack, they can also be very high in calories or sugar.
If you’re craving a smoothie, then your best bet is to make it yourself. Avoid adding sugar by using a natural sweetener like vanilla extract or honey. Instead of using a fruit concentrate, reach for fresh fruit and vegetables instead.
1 cup hulled fresh strawberries
½ cup frozen blue berries or raspberries
½ cup skim milk
½ cup low fat plain yogurt
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth.
